Village of Kizashi(2015)

Village of Kizashi

Kizashi is an archaic Japanese word that means “an auspicious oracle sent from Kami (the God).”

This project takes the form of a tour of fictitious sources of mystical energy in the satoyama community forest behind the site of deserted Suwa Jinja shrine, by setting up a number of nature worship places within the area where one is tempted to imagine that such things did exist in ancient times.

The name of the district, Akaiwa, literally means “red rock,” and the forest stands out with its very unique shape. There are a number of Jomon prehistoric ruins scattered about in the area, too. The hill, which looks down on the village, has actually been playing a role of spiritual keystone for the local community. This project was developed from my imagination that the remains of religious activities of the prehistoric people can still be seen among the modern villagers.

Each of the suggested routes of the tour, which pass through the checkpoints including a hilltop, a rock, a tree, a spring, a stone statue, and a pile of stones, has its own specific pattern that represents a specific wish.

The footprints of visitors and the traces of their acts and emotions ― with all of these piling up, eventually certain shapes loom up.
